Agriculture 4.0 – Part 1 – Concept and origin

Agriculture 4.0 is also considered as a function of Intelligent Agriculture x Smart Technology x Smart Design x Smart Enterprise. 

The concept of the European Agricultural Machinery (2017):

1) Agriculture 1.0 emerged in the early 20th century, operating with labor-intensive, low-productivity systems. The agriculture is capable of feeding the population but requires large numbers of small farmers and one third of the population involved in the production of raw materials.

2) Agriculture 2.0, which is a green revolution, began in the 1950s, beginning with the improved dwarf wheat variety, but relied heavily on nitrogen fertilization, pesticide use, synthetic chemical fertilizers , together with specialized machinery, to lower costs and increase productivity, profit for all parties.

3) Agriculture 3.0, from improving efficiency to raising profit thanks to initiative and creativity to reduce costs, improve quality, give different products. Starts when the global positioning (GPS) is the first application to locate and navigate. The second is the automatic control and sensor for temperature, humidity, light, nutrition, since the 1990s, the combine harvester is fitted with a display of productivity based on positioning GPS. The third is technological advancement using wireless devices (Telematics).

4) The term Agriculture 4.0 was first used in Germany.

Analogous to Industrial Revolution 4.0, Agriculture 4.0 in Euroupe stands for internal and external integration of husbandry, fisheries, and forestry. This means that information in digital form is available to all partners and production processes, dealing with partners outside the unit such as suppliers and consumers who are transmitting data, Data analysis is largely automated over the internet. Using internet devices can facilitate the management of large amounts of data and internal connections with partners outside the unit. Other terms commonly used are “Intelligent Agriculture” and “Digital Cultivation”, based on the introduction of intelligent agricultural devices. Intelligent devices include sensors, automatic regulators, technology that can be calculated as brain and digital communication. Agriculture 4.0 paves the way for further evolution, including those that do not require direct human presence and rely on device systems to make decisions automatically.
